Horseback Riding

Montana’s cowboys and cowgirls spend most of their time on horseback, and no trip to Montana would be complete without a trail ride! Covering just under one million acres, the Helena National Forest is dominated by the awe-inspiring Big Belt and Elkhorn Mountain Ranges and includes the Gates of the Mountain Wilderness Area.  While on trail, along with our breathtaking mountain views, you may see black bear, elk, whitetail and mule deer, antelope, bighorn sheep and mountain goats which roam freely in this wilderness area.  Along its many streams and lakes you may spot bald eagles, golden eagles or many other birds of prey.  Enjoy Montana’s “Big Sky” as you can only experience on horseback.

The majority of the Helena National Forest and all of the Gates of the Mountain Wilderness Area is accessible only by hiking or on horseback. As you ride, note the difference in vegetation as the elevation changes. Ponderosa pine and juniper grow at lower levels on slopes facing the sun; Douglas fir dot the cooler northern slopes. Keep an eye out for “sheds” (the antlers that both elk and deer shed yearly).  If you find them, they’re yours to keep!

To ensure horse and rider safety in mountainous terrain, riders for our guided trail rides must be at least 8 years old & weigh less than 225 lbs.All horseback riders receive personalized attention and instruction from our friendly wranglers. Helmets are available. No previous riding experience necessary!

Our season runs from Memorial Day through September 30th. After that the area around the ranch becomes federally designated elk wintering land!
